January 13, 2006, Newsletter Issue #1: Breast Cancer Takes Many Forms

Tip of the Week

The definition of breast cancer is cancer that originates in the breast. Beyond that, you might say that anything goes. Breast cancer cells aren't always predictable, often affecting the breast in different ways and at different speeds. Some cancers are lazy and grow slowly. Others find fertile growing ground in the breast tissue and grow rapidly. Still others get bored with breasts and decide to try out other places in the body. Though doctors generalize the disease into certain breast cancer types, like invasive breast cancer or advanced breast cancer, you shouldn't try to compare one case of breast cancer to another. Learn about breast cancer types and how they are different. Aunt Sally may have recuperated beautifully after a simple lumpectomy, but Aunt Ida might have needed a radical mastectomy. Similarly, your grandmother may have died of her breast cancer, but that's certainly no indication of what's in store should you be diagnosed with it.
